A Week in Doljmaa’s Home

And so, Erdene stayed on, helping Doljmaa with small errands and housework for an entire week. Doljmaa’s older sister, worried that her younger sibling might repeat the mistakes of her past, expressed concern: “Are you seriously going to let that guy stay here?” To which Doljmaa calmly replied, “He’s a stranger in the city, he doesn’t know anyone. How can I throw someone like that out onto the street?” He did seem like a calm, decent man. Still, her sister warned her, “You never know. Just… be careful and get to know him properly.” But Doljmaa couldn’t bring herself to ask him to leave, and Erdene made no move to go either. Then one evening, Doljmaa came home—and Erdene was gone. She waited, wondering what could’ve happened. But he didn’t return that night. She thought of going to ask her brother-in-law, but felt too uneasy to follow through. The next evening, when she got home from work, Erdene was there. She asked, “Where were you?” “I went to the countryside,” he replied simply. She didn’t ask what for, or where exactly he had gone.
